General Donations Policies
Note: Book Donations are closed until mid-September.
Do NOT bring donations to the library.
Please take donations to Herndon, Great Falls, Oakton, Patrick Henry (Vienna), or Chantilly branches.
ALWAYS CHECK THIS WEBSITE before bringing donations to the Reston Library.
If you have a large collection of books to donate, review our list below of books we can and cannot accept. If your books qualify, contact us!

- Books for readers of all ages, from newborn to 99+
- Good condition used books in fiction or non-fiction
- New books, best sellers, coffee-table, gift books
- Cookbooks - very recent or favorite classics
- Non-English books - non-fiction only; educational books such as dictionaries, language learning,"Berlitz", word concepts, etc.
- Educational materials - Recent (typically within the last 5 years) text books, test-prep materials. No high school or college foreign language text books.
- Especially desired non-fiction subjects: Art, Biographies, Business, History, Investing, Philosophy, Science
- Collectible books, antiquarian items, books prior to 1950
- Collectible magazines - Prior to 1950
- New Magazines - Less than 3 months old
- Other media - CDs, DVDs, audio books on CD, educational DVDs from The Great Courses
- Good condition puzzles or games (all the pieces)
NO, THANK YOU
- NO books with heavy underlining, dogeared pages, smoke, water, pet damage, mildew or dirt.
- NO VHS tapes, audio cassettes, or phonograph/vinyl records
- NO books, novels, text books, history books in foreign languages EXCEPT "how to learn a language"
- NO self-help, relationship, medical books more than 3 years old
- NO travel books more than 3 years old
- NO maps, atlases, TripTiks, etc.
- NO National Geographic, Smithsonian, oversized magazines, or free/membership magazines (AARP, AAA, etc.)
- NO remainders from yard sales, rummage sales, etc.
